Category: Geeks r Us
Hey everyone, What's everyones favorite player of choice for music. Winamp or windows media player?
Let me know your answers, and why.
Winamp! I just like it more! LOL
definatly winamp because I well hmm I just like it? lol I've also heard people say that Windows Media player is not that good of a program.
this topic has been moved to geeks are us, cause...well, you're asking about computer programs, and technical stuff, and junk...so, well, I felt personally, that it belongs in the geeks are us category!
winamp all the way! hehehehe smile- angel
Foobar 2000 all the way. It has a low footprint, support for many native file types, can be customized and scripted to display whatever you want, has support for replay gain (volume adjustment), and has advanced functions like mass tagging and renaming files from their tags. You can also completely change the interface if you want.
WinAmp. It's just easier and it's the bomb all the way.
Winamp! Yes, my winamp has an issue where it decides to only play out of one speaker and I've not been able to fix it, but I deal. Why? Well... there's the winamp library, always a personal favorite of mine, and winamp's just awesome. So yeah, I'll deal with the one speaker thing. If anyone has any tips though, I'll entertain them.
Definitely Winamp! It may not be the easiest, but to me it seems like it's a better program.
yo Tir, check your panning settings...I think you might've messsed them up, and that might be why it's coming out of one speaker. Ask me sometime when we're on ventrilo, if you want exact instructions on how to do it. Or, just read the help files, and the jaws help files for winamp.
john, all you have to do to change your pan settings is use the following key strokes. "ctrl H" and "ctrl ;" to pan full right or full left respectively. "ctrl J" and "ctrl L" to pan half right or left and "ctrl K" pans directly to the middle.
hope that helps.
Winamp all the way. I use to use only Windows Media Player, but when I learned that in Winamp it is a lot easier to setup and maintain play lists, open and play a folder if you have all your music in one folder like I do on my laptop or want to listen to one book, isn't as sluggish when listening to an Internet broadcast, can play more media types without a plugin; (referring directly to .ogg), has more keystrokes that work more often for jumping around a file; (including, skip 5 seconds back or forward in a file, jump to time or marker...), and just so much more that makes it better to use.
windows media player.
the quality's better i think
I like both but i usualy use winnamp. One thing i like about winnamp that media player hasn't got is that somebody can oppen more than one winnamp windows and mix tracks. In windows media player there is a crossfade feature but not accesible at all so for this particular feature winnamp is better. And if anyone wants to try that when one winnamp window is oppen press control+alt+n and a second window will oppen so somebody can mix tracks.
I hope you found it useful.
Nikos.
Didn't know about that feature, but I've found another reason to prefer Winamp here lately...On my laptop Windows Media Player seems to lockup my system temporarily. It won't respond to the volume commands or anything, but Winamp runs just fine. I'm figuring it's probably do to the amount of memory resources most Microsoft products require...
I use wniamp for most everything. However, if foobar would support dsp plug ins, I'd be all over it. I use windows media to listen to a lot of hockey games through the year, but I choose winamp over everything else. Real player gets used only for football and basketball, otherwise it would be gone off this system!
It's me again. Just thought of something else.
When i have winnamp open and i try to do something else for example use msn messenger my screen reader doesn't seam to work very well. There are things that it won't read until i close winnamp.
That happens with jaws and supernova.
But with winnamp is very easy to create playlists. So again my oppinion is that both are good in their own way. Windows media is not accesible for crossfading, making playlists but the screen reader works ok if i have got it open and i am doing something else at the same time. And finaly with windows media player we can tern down the music without terning down jaws or supernova. With winnamp or real player if i tern the volume down it terns down the screen reader as well. If you want to tern down media player without effecting jaws or any other screen reader press f9 and 10 if you have got 9 and above or up and down arrows.

Foobar does support DSP plug-ins. Not all the plug-ins are hosted on the Foobar website. I doubt it has those compression ones that the Winamp people use, because Foobar users are purists and would never think to distort their audio by compressing it any further. It also doesn't support the Shoutcast plug-ins for broadcasting. Basically I use Foobar for organizing and playing my music, and Winamp for streaming podcast feeds and MP3 Pro files.
The newest versions of Winamp does turn down the volume of the music without turning down the system volume, or at least with WindowsXP, Winamp5.1 and Jaws5.1 this is so.
I hate windows media player, I just find it really inaccessible and difficult to use. So, I use Winamp to play music, the only thing I don't like about Winamp is that you can't speak on MSN and have it running at the same time. But apart from that, it's alright.
Oh yes you can. Make sure Winamp isn't set to be on top of everything.
That's a good idea. I will try it.
Much better now.
Just go and uncheck the always on top option.

Had the problem myself a while back, and remembered the fix so...*smile* Glad it helped though.
I like winamp because it is a lot easier to use. Not that many tabs. No tabs at all. But in windows media player you have to press tab to get ware you want to go and that is a pain in the ass because while you are listening to your music you have to press tab. So I like winamp.
I use winamp as well. Not only is it easier to use and more accessible for blind and visually impaired people, but it also plays more file formats, such as ogg. Which is good because a lot of my audio files are in Ogg format. I'd highly recommend Winamp. Although, I do use Windows Media Player to rip my music from CD's that I buy from the store.

I like winamp better as well. Except for ripping, windows media player is a pain. I definitely regret updating to player 11.
2 winamp questions...
1. Has anyone tried pro?
2. Is there an easy fast way to get to my bookmarks? I use winamp a lot for listening to internet radio.
PS. Try real alternative for those that need realplayer.
I really like winamp, especially, the global hotkeys support. Now you can have the player sitting on your system tray (displaying the title of the stream or the currently playing song) and control it remotely. For shortcuts, i use the regular playback controls with a control plus shift to them. So my hotkeys are as follows: play--control shift x; previous--control shift z; pause--control shift c; stop--control shift V. To forward and rewind I have control plus slash and contorl plus period respectively. To show or hide the window i have it set to control shift slash. I believe the bookmarks is inside the menu when you right click the winamp icon on system tray.
Currently Winamp. It's easier to use in my opinion, and yes I've used Windows Media Player...Easier to do things like skip forward ETC. However, always willing to check out others I hear about...Going to look up one some time today, and also working on ideas and plans for writing my own. So, what I use depends on what I find the best, and always willing to try the new. *smile*
one thing i can't figure out is why alt-f is this big secret or something! when a friend recommended winamp and i first got it i couldn't use it at all! the alt key wouldn't go into the menus or anything! then i hit alt-a alt-b alt-c etc til i got to alt-f! why don't people tell people about alt-f before they get the program? anyway since i found alt-f i don't use much of anything else since media player doesn't have book marks and winamp does!
well I like winamp better, because of how accessible it is. I've never tried windows media player, burt I've heard winamp is more accessible.

alt F? Thats the same as alt, then space, which opens up the system menu in any application. The system menu lets you minimize and maximize windows. Additionally, if you press enter on the nullsoft winamp option, then tab to keyboard shorcuts and performa click on any portion of the text, then read with normal keys, there is help available for keyboard shortcuts. You know what? in fact i'll just post them here.
sections are marked by 3 asterisks (stars). This list is quite long.
Straight out from winamp 5.1
Note that these keyboard shortcuts are a good starting point, but this list is far from complete. :)
